From 1978 until her death in 2002, the french-american artist Niki de Saint Phalle set out the most ambitious artistic adventure of her career: The Tarot Garden. A vast sculpture park representing the 22 major arcana of the Tarot located in Capalbio, Italy-Tuscany.
The sculptures were made with iron reinforcements, covered with projected concrete, then mirrors ans ceramics. The ceramics were made (casted and baked) on site, and handcrafted.
To finance the construction, Saint Phalle determined to be her own patron. She created a perfume, multiples and limited editions.
To manage her garden and ensure its proper preservation, Saint Phalle created a foundation during her lifetime, which is still active today and chaired by Bloum Cardenas, the artist’s granddaughter and holder of her moral rights.
Le Jardin des Tarots est ouvert au public depuis 1998.
